One Day Somme Tour
The involvement of the ANZAC soldier in the Great War is evident all along the Western Front. For this tour we explore the Somme sector which saw some of the most intense fighting of the whole war. Let us take you on a real trail of discovery; you will visit the important sites and cemeteries that commemorate the sacrifice of the brave and tenacious Australian soldiers.
Beginning with the 1916 actions we visit places such as Pozières where over six weeks of fighting some 23,000 Australian soldiers were either killed or wounded. Mouquet Farm, often called ‘Mucky’ or `Moo Cow` Farm is within the Pozières battlefield. From the bronze tablet in front of the farm your guide will bring history alive as they describe the desperate conditions of this shell-torn battlefield.
Focussing our mind on to 1918, when the German Army made one last attempt to win the war, we visit Villers-Bretonneux, the scene of the great Australian counter-attack. The Battle of Hamel, fought on 4 July 1918 was a great success for the commander of Australian forces, Sir John Monash. Your guide will orientate you and explain the events of this well orchestrated 93 minute battle.
We also talk about Manfred von Richthofen, the famous German air ace nicknamed ‘The Red Baron’ and will visit the field where he was forced down. The final stop of the day is at the Australian National Memorial in Villers-Bretonneux. It is now a peaceful location and an ideal place to reflect upon the day and pay respects to those who paid the ultimate price.
If you have a relative that is commemorated on a memorial or is buried in one of the many cemeteries or served in the area we can change the itinerary to accommodate.
